Welcome to SloveniaThe Republic of Slovenia is bordered by Austria, Hungary, Italy, Croatia and the Adriatic Sea.
Ljubljana is the capital. Maribor is the second city followed by Kranj. Koper, Slovenia's only seaport, is an important port for both Slovenia and neighbouring Austria.
Slovenia's terrain consists of mountains, hills, plateaux, karst limestone regions and a strip of Adriatic coastline. Slovenia's major rivers include the Drava, Sava and Mura.
Slovenia has dozens of well-groomed ski centres with lifts. The best known ski centers world-wide are Kranjska Gora, which hosts an annual World Cup men's slalom and giant slalom competition, and Maribor Pohorje, which hosts the annual World Cup women's slalom and giant slalom Golden Fox competition.
The highest ski centre in Slovenia is on Mount Kanin, where the snow remains well into the spring. Also among the most popular destinations for alpine skiers are Krvavec, not far from Ljubljana, Rogla in the Zreče Pohorje region, and Golte above Mozirje. Cerkno Ski Centre is the most modern family ski slope in Slovenia. The larger ski centres also maintain trails for snowboarding, sledding, cross-country skiing, and even ski touring.
Slovenian cuisine has been greatly influenced by the surrounding countries, such as Austria and Italy. Main meals often consist of soup and a meat or fish dish accompanied by salad and bread. Milk and cheese, especially cottage cheese, are traditional to the Slovene diet. Espresso coffe and herbal and iced teas are popular. Fruit juices are produced locally. Alcoholic drinks include wine, beer (pivo) and plum brandy (Slivovka).
