About Essaouira
Essaouira is one of the best known towns in Morocco. Set on the Atlantic Coast, Essaouira is beautiful with a bustling harbour, fine fish food and colourful souks.

Essaouira is easily accessible from Marrakech, either by taxi, train or private transfer.

Essaouira is a watersport paradise. The beach dominates the town, but the Atlantic breeze lends itself more to watersports than sunbathing with kitesurfing and windsurfing being popular. The best spots are reported to be Essaouira Bay, Sidi Kaouki, Cape Sim and Mouley Bouzertoune. Equipment can be hired from various hire centres on the beach front.

If you want to get away from the coastline, a horse-trek is the perfect way to see the surrounding countryside in Essaouira. Visit the village of Diabat for organised trips.

The Potters' Quarter

Visit the potters’ quarter on the hill in Safi. Dozens of potters can be found here as the soil is very chalky clay, rich in iron oxide. You can watch the whole process – soaking, drying and kneading of the clay, followed by the delicate decoration of yellow, green and brown pieces. The process is so intricate you will almost forget to haggle!

Art lovers' paradise...

Essaouira is bursting with art galleries and is therefore perfect for lovers of abstract painting, cubist art and sculpture. You can see the works of many leading modern painters, many of whom were born here.

The goat and the Argan tree..

In the countryside around Essaouira there is a tree that is only found in Morocco – the Argan tree. It produces a nut from which a sought after edible oil is extracted. Goats love the leaves and have no hesitation in climbing to the top of the trees to find the tastiest leaves!
