About BanjulBanjul is the capital of the Gambia and has maintained its charm and authentic African character whilst being a welcoming tourist destination.
Banjul is the smallest capital city in Africa. Standing on St Mary's Island on the banks of the River Gambia, Banjul was founded by the British in 1816 as a trading post and base for suppressing the slave trade.
Banjul is the main urban area of the Gambia. The centre is well worth a visit, it has many old British colonial buildings, colourful street markets and craft stalls. Visit Albert Market, which is a typical vibrant west African market where the choice of goods on sale is amazing. Boat excursions run to Albreda, of 'Roots' fame, home of slave houses and a slave trading station on James Island. Cape Point is situated just west of Banjul city centre.
There is a fantastic mix of hotels in Banjul with something to suit all budgets. Many of the larger luxury hotel chains have hotels in the Gambia and this level of luxury is extremely affordable. It is an approximate 50 minute transfer from Banjul Airport.
