Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids

Situated about 20km (12 miles) south of Giza, Saqqara or Sakkara is one of the most extensive archaeological sites which contains many important monuments such as the Step Pyramid of Djoser, Pyramid of Unas, Pyramid of Sekhemket, Mastaba of Ti and the deep underground Persian Tombs.

More than 80 pyramids were built at Saqqara and other sites along the Nile, but it is the largest and best preserved of the Pyramids of Giza.

Downtown & Garden City

A visitor standing in the centre of downtown Cairo could be forgiven for thinking they were in Paris. Three wide straight streets pass into and through the Maydan to make a six pointed etoile, which is flanked by six-storey apartment buildings with shops on the ground floors, balconies above French windows.

To give more substance to the delusion, newspaper stalls display Le Monde, Liberation & Paris Match. the Cafe Riche is hidden away down a side street (within a stones throw to the French Consulate) and almost facing are teh offices of Air France.

A tour of the district's commercial life, however, shows its essentially non European character. Parts of each street are specialised, bazaar-fashion, in a single kind of merchandise.

On Shari Sulayman Pasha (Talat Harb), miscellaneous cheap imported goods - pocket radios and MP3 players, trinkets, aftershaves, perfumes and sometimes clothes are displayed together in crowded windows.

Giza

Giza is situated approximately 11km (7 miles) southwest of Central Cairo. The suburb of Giza stretches out what was originally agricultural land, to a dry plateau on which stand the famous and majestic Great Pyramids of Egypt.

There are three main pyramids at Giza, each with its outcrop of satellite pyramids where teh queens of the Pharoahs were placed in their burial tombs.

Pyramid building began at the time of the 3rd Dynasty, when Pharaoh Zoser instructed an architect called Imhotep to build him a lasting monument of stone at Saqqara, just south of Giza.

Dawn over the pyramids is regarded as one of the most exciting and spectacious events for tourists and the Sound of the Light Show with peformances each evening is well worth experiencing.

Each of the Pyramids is aligned precisely 8.5 degrees west of magnetic north, and it is understood that their builders positioned them by using the Pole Star although the mystery of the Pyramids still manages to leave many unanswered questions to experts.
