About AlexandriaUntil the second half of the 20th century, Alexandria was home to a large Greek community as well as substantial Jewish, French and Italian minorities. The majority of these people were involved in the commerce and industry sectors, and left Egypt in the 1950s because of the nationalizing policies of Nasser. As a result, Alexandria today, with a population of approximately 3 million is far less cosmopolitan and more Egyptians than at any other time in its long history.
The historic centre of Alexandria is around the western and eastern harbours, which are seperated by a promontory on which stands a Mameluke fortress (now a naval museum) built on site of the famous Paros, and a 19th century Royal Palace (which unfortunately is not open to the general public).
The modern day city stretches for some 16km (10 miles) along the coast of the Mediterranean hemmed in to the south by the El-Mahmudiya Canal and the brackish waters of Lake Maryut.
