As with all tropical climates you must expect a lot of everything when it happens. When it rains it really does rain, and when the sun shines you had better not forget to cream up!
Costa Rica gets its fair share of all types of weather but on the whole you will experience dry sunny and a moderately humid climate depending on when you visit. The dry season (summer) falls between December and April and the wet season (winter) falls between May and November.
To gain entry into Costa Rica nationals of Britain, Australia, Canada, USA and other EU states must produce a passport with at least 30 days validity from the date of arrival or for the length of stay, whichever is greater. For those who are staying for more than 30 days then an exit visa must be obtained from the Immigration Department in San José at least 3 weeks before leaving Costa Rica. For those who are staying for less than 30 days this is not necessary as long as a disembarkation card is produced at the point of exit.
All nationals of Britain, Australia, Canada, USA and other EU states are required to produce proof of a return flight ticket prior to gaining entry into Costa Rica.
Nationals of Britain, Australia, Canada, USA and other EU states are not required to have a visa on entry into Costa Rica for stays of less than 90 days however, for stays of over 90 days then a visa must be obtained. Nationals of Australia, Bulgaria and Ireland are required to have a visa for stays of over 30 days. The authorities will detain all foreigners who overstay their visa period.
